An eighteenth-century etching by Jean Charles Delafosse depicting the allegory of Virginity, featuring a unicorn, floral garlands, and classical motifs.
This etching by Jean Charles Delafosse, titled 'Maagdelijkheid' or 'Virginity', originates from his influential series of decorative designs. Delafosse was a prominent French architect, sculptor, and engraver whose work defined the transition from the Rococo to the Neoclassical style in eighteenth-century France. His publications, particularly the 'Iconologie historique', provided a vast repertoire of motifs for contemporary craftsmen, including furniture makers and silversmiths.
The composition features a central medallion containing a radiant face, framed by a dense arrangement of floral garlands. Below this, a cartouche depicts a classical scene of a maiden with a unicorn, a traditional symbol of purity and chastity. The surrounding elements include a classical ewer, flaming torches, and quivers, all rendered with the precise line work characteristic of the period's printmaking techniques. The arrangement reflects the period's fascination with allegory and the systematic classification of virtues through visual iconography.
Delafosse’s approach to design is marked by a balance between structural clarity and ornamental abundance. The etching demonstrates his ability to integrate disparate symbolic elements into a cohesive decorative scheme. The use of light and shadow, achieved through varied hatching, gives the objects a sense of volume and physical presence. This print serves as a record of the aesthetic priorities of the mid-eighteenth century, where classical mythology and moral allegory were frequently employed to decorate domestic and public spaces. The work remains a valuable reference for those interested in the history of decorative arts and the dissemination of Neoclassical motifs through printed media.
