A whimsical illustration by Edmund Dulac from 1907, depicting a girl sitting within the pages of an open book.
This illustration by Edmund Dulac appears in the 1907 publication Fairies I Have Met by Mrs. Rodolph Stawell. Dulac, a French-born artist who spent the majority of his career in Britain, became a central figure in the early twentieth-century boom of gift-book publishing. His work is characterised by a precise, controlled application of watercolour and a distinct approach to composition that often blends the real with the fantastical.
In this scene, a young girl is depicted sitting within the pages of an open book. The composition plays with scale and perspective, as the girl appears as a physical inhabitant of the illustrated world printed on the paper. The figures surrounding her, rendered in a more caricatured, expressive style, contrast with her own more grounded appearance. Dulac uses a muted palette, typical of his early illustrative work, to create a sense of storybook atmosphere. The lines are clean and deliberate, defining the forms of the girl's polka-dot dress and the surrounding narrative elements.
Dulac was influenced by Persian miniatures and Japanese woodblock prints, which informed his sense of flat, decorative space. This particular work demonstrates his ability to integrate text and image, a skill that made him a preferred collaborator for publishers during the Edwardian era. The image captures a moment of narrative immersion, where the boundary between the reader and the story dissolves. The work remains a clear example of the whimsical, imaginative aesthetic that defined the period's children's literature, providing a window into the visual culture of the early 1900s.
