Stefan Luchian, a central figure in Romanian modern art, produced this study of snapdragons, known locally as lion's mouth, during a period when his health was in decline. Confined to his home, he turned his attention to the immediate surroundings of his studio, focusing on floral subjects with a renewed sense of urgency and colour. This work demonstrates his mastery of the pastel and oil mediums, where he applied pigment with a direct, expressive touch.

The composition centres on a rustic ceramic vessel, which holds a dense arrangement of deep red and white snapdragons. Luchian avoids rigid academic structure, opting instead for a fluid application of paint that captures the weight and texture of the petals. The background remains largely neutral, allowing the saturated tones of the flowers to dominate the visual field. Scattered petals at the base of the vase provide a sense of natural decay, a common theme in his later floral studies.
