A nineteenth-century lithograph by Horace Vernet depicting a knight taking leave of a woman, rendered in the Romantic style.
Horace Vernet, a prolific figure in nineteenth-century French art, produced this lithograph titled 'Les Adieux' during a period when the medium was gaining traction for its ability to reproduce narrative scenes with precision. The composition depicts a knight in full armour preparing to depart, his horse waiting patiently at the threshold of a stone structure. A woman stands in the doorway, her hand resting upon his arm in a gesture of parting. The scene draws upon the medievalist themes popularised by the Romantic movement, where chivalry and emotional separation were common subjects for artists and writers alike.
Vernet demonstrates his technical facility through the varied textures of the stone masonry, the metallic sheen of the armour, and the soft folds of the woman's gown. The lithographic process allows for a range of grey tones, which the artist uses to create depth between the foreground figures and the mountainous backdrop. The architecture, featuring a pointed arch and a heraldic crest above the door, provides a sense of historical setting that was typical of the Troubadour style, a movement within French Romanticism that looked back to the Middle Ages for inspiration.
This print captures a moment of quiet tension. The knight is already turned towards his horse, his posture suggesting the necessity of his departure, while the woman remains anchored to the domestic space. The interaction is understated, relying on the physical proximity of the figures to convey the gravity of the moment. As a lithograph printed by C. de Lasteyrie, this work reflects the collaborative nature of print production in the early nineteenth century, where artists worked closely with master printers to achieve high-quality reproductions for a growing public audience. The work remains a clear example of Vernet's ability to balance narrative clarity with atmospheric detail.
