A detailed eighteenth-century etching by the comte de Caylus, reproducing a mythological shipwreck scene originally designed by Jean-Antoine Watteau.
This etching, titled Le Naufrage, is a reproduction of a drawing by Jean-Antoine Watteau. Executed by the comte de Caylus, a prominent figure in the French Enlightenment and an amateur engraver, the work demonstrates the technical precision required to translate the fluid, painterly qualities of Watteau into the linear medium of printmaking. The composition depicts a dramatic maritime scene where a small boat, occupied by several figures, struggles against turbulent waters. To the right, a figure resembling Neptune stands upon a shell-like vessel pulled by horses, gesturing towards the distressed travellers. The background features a fortified structure perched upon a rocky cliff, adding a sense of scale and isolation to the narrative.
The etching employs a variety of hatching techniques to convey the movement of the sea and the atmospheric conditions of the storm. The contrast between the calm, classical figure of the deity and the chaotic, swirling waves creates a tension typical of the period's interest in mythological subjects. Caylus was known for his dedication to preserving the works of his contemporaries, and this print serves as a record of Watteau's original design. The inclusion of the publisher's details at the bottom, mentioning Gersaint and Surugue, provides historical context regarding the distribution of such prints in eighteenth-century Paris. The work remains a fine example of the collaborative nature of the print trade during the Rococo era, where the skills of the draughtsman and the engraver combined to bring complex compositions to a wider audience. The print captures the theatricality inherent in Watteau's work, translating his light, gestural style into a more structured, graphic format suitable for collection and study.
