A detailed seventeenth-century Flemish etching depicting a rural scene with figures resting on a hillside, after a design by Lucas van Uden.
This etching by Philips Augustijn Immenraet captures a serene rural scene, typical of the seventeenth-century Flemish tradition. The composition is anchored by a steep, craggy bank in the foreground, where a small group consisting of a man, a woman, and a child rests. Their presence provides a sense of scale against the expansive view that unfolds beyond them. The middle ground reveals a village with a church spire, nestled among trees, while a windmill sits atop a distant hill. The sky is filled with billowing clouds, rendered with fine, directional lines that suggest movement and atmospheric depth.
Immenraet, a Flemish painter and etcher, was active in Antwerp. His work often reflects the influence of his contemporaries, particularly in the treatment of foliage and the construction of space. The inscription in the upper right corner, 'Lucas van Vden inuenit', indicates that the design originates from Lucas van Uden, a prominent painter known for his atmospheric depictions of the countryside. This practice of one artist creating a design while another executes the print was common in the period, allowing for the wider dissemination of compositions.
The etching technique employed here relies on a variety of line weights to define texture and form. The heavy, dark hatching on the foreground bank contrasts with the lighter, more delicate lines used for the distant fields and the sky. This variation creates a clear sense of recession, drawing the eye from the shaded foreground into the sunlit valley. The print demonstrates a mastery of tonal balance, using the white of the paper to represent light and the density of the etched lines to create shadow. It is a fine example of the collaborative nature of printmaking in the Low Countries during the seventeenth century.
