A serene 19th-century ink wash painting by Qian Du, featuring a tranquil river scene with willow trees, a small pavilion, and distant mountains.
This work by Qian Du, a scholar-painter active during the Qing Dynasty, captures a serene river scene through the traditional medium of ink and light colour on paper. The composition follows the established conventions of literati painting, where the artist prioritises personal expression and poetic atmosphere over strict realism.
In the foreground, a lone figure navigates a small boat across the water, surrounded by clusters of weeping willows rendered with delicate, rhythmic brushwork. These trees frame a small pavilion situated on the bank, providing a sense of human presence within the natural environment. The middle ground remains open, suggesting a vast expanse of water that leads the eye toward the distant, rolling mountains. These peaks are depicted with soft, layered washes of ink, creating a sense of depth and atmospheric perspective.
Qian Du was known for his mastery of the brush, often drawing inspiration from earlier masters of the Yuan Dynasty. His approach here is restrained, relying on subtle tonal variations rather than bold contrasts. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper right corner integrates the visual image with literary tradition, a common practice among scholar-artists of the period. The red seals provide a visual anchor, balancing the composition while marking the provenance of the piece.
This print captures the quietude of the scene, preserving the texture of the original paper and the nuances of the ink application. It is a representative example of the scholar-artist tradition, where the act of painting is a meditative practice. The work invites close observation of the brushstrokes, from the fine lines defining the willow branches to the broader, softer washes that shape the distant hills. It remains a calm addition to any collection, reflecting the aesthetic values of 19th-century Chinese art.
