A nineteenth-century lithograph depicting King Willem I offering a reassuring gesture to a man experiencing a wardrobe malfunction.
This lithograph by Jean Baptiste Ambroise Marcellin Jobard captures a specific anecdotal moment involving King Willem I of the Netherlands. The scene depicts the monarch interacting with a man whose trousers have torn, a situation that serves as the basis for the print's narrative. The text below the image reads, 'Remettez-vous monsieur, ce sont de ces petits accidens dont personne n'est à l'abri, cela m'est arrivé quelquefois à moi-même,' which translates to an empathetic reassurance from the King regarding the commonality of such minor mishaps.
Jobard, a Belgian inventor, lithographer, and museum director, utilised the medium of lithography to disseminate social and political commentary during the early nineteenth century. The composition is structured with a clear focus on the interaction between the two figures. The King stands on the right, dressed in his military uniform, while the embarrassed man stands on the left, holding his hat and attempting to cover the tear in his clothing. The background is minimal, featuring simple drapery and a table, which directs the viewer's attention entirely to the exchange of gestures and the humour of the situation.
Lithography allowed artists like Jobard to produce prints with a level of tonal variation that mimicked drawing, providing a softer aesthetic than the rigid lines of engraving. This work belongs to a broader tradition of anecdotal prints that humanised public figures by placing them in relatable, everyday scenarios. The print reflects the cultural interest in the private lives of royalty during the period, often blending historical record with lighthearted social observation. The technical execution demonstrates the precision typical of Jobard's output, with careful attention paid to the textures of the military attire and the subtle shading of the interior space.
