A 19th-century lithograph depicting King William I of the Netherlands rejecting a courtier's flattery, reflecting the political tensions of 1829.
This lithograph by Jean Baptiste Ambroise Marcellin Jobard captures a specific political anecdote from 1829. The scene depicts King William I of the Netherlands encountering a courtier who attempts to flatter him. The monarch is shown in a moment of stern rejection, refusing the sycophantic gesture of the man bowing before him. The caption below the image, written in French, translates to: 'All my happiness would be to kiss your august hand,' followed by the King's retort: 'Such a request is little worthy of a Belgian.'
Jobard, a French lithographer who spent much of his career in Brussels, utilised the medium of lithography to disseminate political commentary and social satire. The composition is structured with clear, architectural lines, framing the figures within a formal palace setting. The King stands upright, his posture conveying authority and disdain for the obsequious behaviour of the courtier. The surrounding figures, dressed in military uniforms, observe the interaction with neutral expressions, adding to the tension of the encounter.
Technically, the work demonstrates the precision of early 19th-century lithographic printing. The tonal range is achieved through fine stippling and cross-hatching, creating a sense of depth within the interior space. The artist focuses on the psychological dynamic between the two central figures, using gesture and body language to convey the moral of the narrative. This piece provides a glimpse into the political climate of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands shortly before the Belgian Revolution of 1830. It reflects the growing friction between the Dutch monarchy and the Belgian populace, captured here through a moment of public reprimand.
