A classic Op Art composition by Victor Vasarely, featuring a geometric grid that creates an illusion of depth and movement through colour and repetition.
Victor Vasarely, a central figure in the development of Op Art, created Keiho C1 as a study in optical perception and geometric order. The composition relies on a rigorous grid system, where small, slanted rectangular units are arranged to create a sense of movement and spatial depth. By manipulating the colour relationships between these units and the background, Vasarely generates a flickering effect that challenges the viewer's eye.
The work is constructed from a series of squares and rectangles, each filled with a repeating pattern of diagonal strokes. These strokes vary in colour, shifting from cool blues and pale pinks to deep purples and greens, all set against a dominant red ground. This specific arrangement creates the illusion of overlapping planes, where some sections appear to recede into the distance while others advance toward the viewer. The precision of the execution is characteristic of Vasarely's approach, which sought to remove the artist's hand from the final image in favour of a mathematical, objective aesthetic.
Vasarely believed that art should be accessible and integrated into the modern environment. His work often explores the relationship between the two-dimensional surface and the three-dimensional space it suggests. In Keiho C1, the interaction of colour and form produces a kinetic energy that remains constant regardless of the viewer's position. This piece demonstrates the artist's ability to transform simple geometric shapes into complex visual experiences through systematic repetition and careful colour placement. It is a clear example of his lifelong investigation into the mechanics of human vision and the potential for abstract forms to communicate without reliance on traditional representation.
