A detailed 1795 Dutch etching celebrating the alliance between the Batavian and French Republics, featuring elaborate calligraphy and neoclassical allegory.
This print by Jan Lucas van der Beek commemorates the 1795 alliance between the Batavian Republic and the French Republic. The composition functions as a political broadside, blending calligraphic text with neoclassical iconography. At the centre, the title is rendered in elaborate, decorative script, flanked by two circular vignettes. The left vignette depicts a formal diplomatic assembly, while the right shows a public gathering around a liberty pole, reflecting the revolutionary spirit of the era.
Above the text, a celestial scene features a female figure, likely representing the Batavian Republic, seated upon clouds. She is surrounded by putti and symbolic objects, including a balance scale and a flag. An eye within a radiant sun, a common masonic and enlightenment motif, watches over the scene from the apex. The lower portion of the print is anchored by a collection of military and civic emblems, including anchors, fasces, and agricultural tools, which suggest the unity and prosperity expected from the new political order.
Van der Beek demonstrates technical precision in his handling of the copper plate. The contrast between the fine, flowing lines of the calligraphy and the structured, shaded figures creates a balanced visual hierarchy. The work is typical of late eighteenth-century Dutch graphic arts, where political propaganda was frequently communicated through highly formalised, symbolic imagery. This print offers a clear view into the visual language used to legitimise the transition from the Dutch Republic to the Batavian Republic under French influence. It remains a document of the political shifts that defined the Netherlands during the Napoleonic period.
