A moody, atmospheric still life by American Impressionist T. C. Steele, featuring a floral arrangement in warm, autumnal tones.
June Glory, painted by T. C. Steele in 1920, captures a floral arrangement with the characteristic brushwork of the American Impressionist tradition. Steele, a member of the Hoosier Group, is widely recognised for his dedication to capturing the nuances of light and atmosphere. In this still life, he shifts his focus from the expansive outdoor scenes for which he is known to the intimate scale of a tabletop composition.
The painting features a dark, earthen-toned vessel holding a cluster of yellow and orange blossoms. The background is rendered in deep, moody shadows, which allows the petals to emerge with a sense of volume and texture. Steele employs a painterly approach, using visible, confident strokes to define the form of the flowers rather than relying on precise outlines. The light appears to originate from the left, catching the edges of the petals and creating a contrast against the darker areas of the composition.
Scattered petals rest upon the surface of the table, adding a sense of transience to the scene. This detail suggests the fleeting nature of the bloom, a common theme in traditional still life painting. The palette is dominated by warm, autumnal tones, despite the title referencing the early summer month of June. This choice of colour creates a cohesive, atmospheric quality that unifies the subject matter. The work demonstrates Steele's ability to apply his interest in light and colour to a domestic setting, resulting in a study that balances observation with expressive handling of paint. It remains a representative example of his later career, where he continued to refine his technique through both plein air and studio practice.
