A serene 14th-century Japanese hanging scroll depicting the bodhisattva Jizō Bosatsu, rendered in ink and gold on silk.
This hanging scroll depicts Jizō Bosatsu, the bodhisattva known for his role as a protector of travellers, children, and those suffering in the afterlife. Originating from the Kamakura period in Japan, this work reflects the religious devotion of the era. The figure stands upon a lotus pedestal, a common motif in Buddhist iconography signifying purity and enlightenment. In his right hand, he holds a khakkhara, or monk's staff, which features rings that chime to warn insects of his approach, thereby preventing accidental harm. His left hand is raised, supporting a jewel, which represents his ability to grant wishes and provide spiritual guidance.
The artist employs a refined technique, using gold pigment to detail the robes and the halo surrounding the deity. The muted, dark background provides a contrast to the luminous figure, drawing the viewer's attention to the serene expression and the precise lines of the drapery. The scroll is framed by decorative silk borders, which are typical of the mounting styles used for religious paintings in Japanese temples. The composition is balanced and vertical, designed to focus the mind during meditation or ritual practice.
Such paintings were often commissioned for private devotion or temple use. The iconography of Jizō Bosatsu became particularly popular during the 14th century, as the deity was increasingly associated with the salvation of all beings. The preservation of the silk and the application of gold leaf suggest that this piece was held in high regard, likely kept in a controlled environment to protect the delicate materials. This print captures the quiet authority of the original, offering a glimpse into the spiritual life of medieval Japan through its careful attention to traditional Buddhist visual language.
