A 1921 lithographic portrait of the artist's daughter, Jean, showcasing George Bellows' mastery of tonal contrast and gestural mark-making.
George Bellows produced this lithographic portrait of his daughter, Jean, in 1921. The work, known as the second stone, demonstrates the artist's technical command of the lithographic process. Bellows utilised the medium to achieve a range of tonal values, moving from the deep, velvety blacks of the background to the softer, lighter applications of ink on the subject's face and clothing.
The portrait captures Jean in a moment of quiet observation. Bellows focused on the play of light across her features, using gestural marks to define the contours of her hair and the simple structure of her dress. The background remains largely abstract, consisting of energetic, dark strokes that push the figure forward. This approach directs the viewer's attention to the child's expression, which is rendered with a sense of immediacy and directness.
Bellows was a member of the Ashcan School, a group of American artists who sought to depict the realities of urban life. While this work is a private, familial subject, it shares the same vigour and technical confidence found in his larger urban scenes. The artist's signature and the notation of the printer, Bolton Brown, appear in the lower margins, confirming the collaborative nature of the printmaking process. The composition relies on the contrast between the dark, atmospheric background and the illuminated form of the child, a technique Bellows refined throughout his career in printmaking. This print offers a clear view into the artist's domestic life and his ability to translate the spontaneity of a sketch into the more permanent, structured format of a lithograph.
