A hand-coloured woodcut depicting the Entry into Jerusalem, produced by the Dutch printer Doen Pietersz. in the early sixteenth century.
This hand-coloured woodcut by the Dutch printer and publisher Doen Pietersz. depicts the biblical narrative of the Entry into Jerusalem. The composition centres on Christ, who is shown riding a donkey towards the city gates. He is surrounded by a group of figures, their expressions and gestures conveying the solemnity of the occasion. The artist employs a clear, graphic style typical of early sixteenth-century book illustration, where bold outlines define the forms before the application of colour.
The work reflects the production methods of the period, where woodcut blocks were used to create illustrations for printed volumes. The hand-colouring adds a layer of visual interest, with specific hues applied to the garments and architectural elements to differentiate the figures from the background. The brickwork of the city gate is rendered with simple, effective lines, while the foliage behind Christ provides a naturalistic frame for the primary subject. The inclusion of a monogram at the top of the gate identifies the workshop or the specific artist responsible for the block.
Doen Pietersz. was active in Amsterdam during the early decades of the sixteenth century, operating a press that produced various religious and secular texts. His work provides insight into the visual culture of the Netherlands during the transition from the late medieval period to the Renaissance. The print demonstrates the functional nature of such illustrations, which were intended to accompany religious narratives and assist in the dissemination of biblical stories to a wider audience. The physical presence of the paper, with its visible texture and the surrounding margins of the book page, reminds the viewer of the original context of this image as part of a larger printed work. This print remains a clear example of the woodcut technique used in Northern European book production.
