A fine etching by Johannes Lutma showcasing the fluid, organic forms of the Dutch Auricular style, featuring a central mask and decorative motifs.
This etching by Johannes Lutma displays the distinctive characteristics of the Auricular style, or 'kwabstijl', which gained popularity in the Netherlands during the mid-seventeenth century. The composition features a central cartouche defined by fluid, cartilage-like forms that appear to melt and fold upon themselves. Lutma, a master silversmith and engraver, utilised his deep understanding of metalwork to translate these malleable shapes into a two-dimensional print.
The design incorporates a central mask, a common motif in Dutch decorative arts of the period, which emerges from the organic, undulating borders of the cartouche. The lines are precise and controlled, demonstrating the technical skill required to render the soft, fleshy quality of the auricular forms. Small decorative elements, including torches and fruit, flank the central structure, providing a sense of balance to the otherwise asymmetrical and restless design. The etching serves as a model for craftsmen, intended to inspire designs for silver objects, frames, or architectural ornaments.
Lutma was a central figure in the development of this aesthetic, which prioritised movement and organic distortion over the rigid geometry of earlier Renaissance styles. The print captures the essence of the Dutch Golden Age interest in naturalistic yet fantastical ornamentation. By focusing on the interplay of light and shadow through cross-hatching, the artist creates a sense of volume and depth, making the cartouche appear as if it were cast in metal. This work remains a primary example of the experimental approach to design that defined the mid-seventeenth-century Dutch decorative arts scene.
