A seventeenth-century etching by Simone Cantarini depicting a quiet domestic scene of the Holy Family.
This etching by Simone Cantarini, an Italian artist of the Baroque period, captures a domestic moment within the Holy Family. Cantarini, who was a pupil of Guido Reni, developed a distinct approach to printmaking that favoured spontaneous, fluid lines over rigid academic structure. In this composition, the Virgin Mary holds the Christ Child, who plays with a string of beads. To the left, Saint Joseph is positioned behind a window frame, his attention directed towards a book. The scene is notable for its informal, human quality, moving away from the formalised iconography often associated with religious subjects of the seventeenth century.
Cantarini uses a series of hatched and cross-hatched lines to define the forms and create shadow, particularly within the folds of the Virgin's garments and the architectural elements of the window. The artist's signature, S.C. da Pesare fe, is visible at the bottom, identifying his origin in Pesaro. The composition relies on a balanced arrangement of figures, with the window frame providing a clear spatial division between the interior space occupied by Mary and the child, and the secondary space where Joseph is situated. The etching reflects the technical skill of the Bolognese school, where the focus remained on the clarity of the line and the expressive potential of the medium. This print offers a view into the domestic life of the Holy Family, rendered with a sense of quietude and focus. The work is a fine example of the etching techniques prevalent in Italy during the mid-seventeenth century, demonstrating the artist's ability to convey narrative through minimal, yet precise, mark-making.
