Hieronymus Holzschuher - Friedrich Wagner

A detailed nineteenth-century engraving by Friedrich Wagner, reproducing Albrecht Dürer's iconic portrait of the Nuremberg patrician Hieronymus Holzschuher.

This fine art print is an engraving by the German artist Friedrich Wagner, depicting the Nuremberg patrician Hieronymus Holzschuher. Wagner was a skilled engraver known for his technical precision in reproducing historical portraits. This work is a direct interpretation of the famous 1526 oil painting by Albrecht Dürer, which remains one of the most celebrated portraits of the Northern Renaissance.

The print captures the intense, piercing gaze of Holzschuher, whose weathered features and white beard are rendered with meticulous attention to texture. Wagner employs a sophisticated system of cross-hatching and fine lines to replicate the tonal depth of the original painting. The subject is framed within an elaborate border, which includes heraldic motifs and Latin inscriptions that provide context regarding the sitter's age and status. The composition maintains the gravity of the original, focusing on the psychological presence of the subject rather than decorative elements.

Friedrich Wagner worked during the nineteenth century, a period when the reproduction of Old Master paintings through engraving was a primary method for disseminating art history to a wider audience. His ability to translate the subtle brushwork of Dürer into the linear language of the burin demonstrates a high level of craftsmanship. The print serves as a study in historical portraiture, preserving the likeness of a significant figure from the German Renaissance. The surrounding frame, complete with the Dürer monogram, adds a layer of art-historical documentation to the piece, situating it within the broader context of Dürer's influence on subsequent generations of German artists. This print is an example of the technical rigour applied to nineteenth-century reproductive printmaking.
