A detailed historical illustration by Jan Goeree depicting the meeting between Hernán Cortés and Moctezuma II, rendered in pen and grey wash.
This drawing by Jan Goeree depicts the historical encounter between the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés and the Aztec ruler Moctezuma II. Executed in pen and ink with grey wash, the work reflects the European fascination with the New World during the early eighteenth century. Goeree, a prolific Dutch illustrator and engraver, often produced works for historical publications, and this piece demonstrates his ability to construct complex narrative scenes within a classical framework.
The composition is structured around the central meeting of the two figures. Cortés, positioned on the left, is shown in European military attire, while Moctezuma is depicted under a canopy, surrounded by attendants. The artist employs a wash technique to create depth and shadow, defining the architectural elements of the city in the background and the figures in the foreground. The inclusion of palm trees and specific feathered headdresses serves as an attempt to convey the exotic nature of the setting, though the artistic conventions remain firmly rooted in the European tradition of the period.
Goeree’s line work is precise, typical of his background in printmaking and book illustration. The scene is not a realistic depiction of the event, but rather a dramatised interpretation intended for a contemporary audience. The use of grey wash provides a monochromatic palette that focuses the viewer on the interaction between the two leaders. The work remains a clear example of how historical narratives were visualised in Dutch print culture, prioritising clarity and composition to communicate the gravity of the encounter. This print offers a view into the historical imagination of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, where artistic interpretation often blended classical composition with colonial narratives.
