A sixteenth-century woodcut depicting the Holy Trinity, featuring the Throne of Grace iconography with bold, graphic lines and traditional religious symbolism.
This woodcut by Cornelis Woons depicts the Holy Trinity, a subject frequently explored in Northern Renaissance printmaking. The composition follows the traditional iconographic arrangement of the Throne of Grace. God the Father is positioned at the top left, wearing a papal tiara and holding an orb, symbolising his dominion over the world. To the right, Christ is shown kneeling, supporting the cross, while the Holy Spirit, represented as a dove, descends between the figures. The figures are rendered with the bold, graphic lines characteristic of sixteenth-century woodblock techniques, where the artist relies on hatching and cross-hatching to define form and shadow within a restricted monochrome palette.
The print exhibits the stylistic conventions of the period, with figures draped in heavy, voluminous robes that obscure the body beneath. The facial features are delineated with simple, direct strokes, and the background is kept minimal to focus attention on the theological narrative. The inclusion of the papal tiara on both God the Father and the figure of Christ reflects the specific ecclesiastical visual language of the time, which often merged divine authority with the symbols of the Church. Small cherubic heads are visible at the base of the composition, providing a sense of celestial space. The work is signed with the initials I.C.I. at the bottom, a common practice for printmakers of this era. This piece offers a clear example of how religious imagery was disseminated through affordable, mass-produced prints, allowing for the circulation of devotional subjects beyond the confines of church walls and private commissions. The stark contrast between the black ink and the paper surface creates a graphic clarity that remains effective even centuries after its production.
