A classic woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi depicting the legendary encounter between the bandit Hakamadare Yasusuke and the courtier Fujiwara no Yasumasa.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi depicts a scene from the legend of the Heian-period courtier Fujiwara no Yasumasa and the bandit Hakamadare Yasusuke. The composition belongs to the series 'Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaido Road', a collaborative project between several prominent artists of the mid-nineteenth century.
In the foreground, the bandit Hakamadare Yasusuke crouches behind a pine tree, his posture tense as he prepares to ambush the courtier. He wears elaborate, patterned garments and carries a sword, his expression one of focused aggression. In the middle ground, Fujiwara no Yasumasa remains oblivious to the threat, seated calmly among the tall grasses while playing a flute. His serene demeanour contrasts with the predatory stance of the bandit.
Kuniyoshi employs a distinct narrative device common in his work: an inset cartouche at the top left provides a secondary view of the mountain landscape, adding spatial depth to the print. The colour palette relies on muted earth tones for the background, which allows the detailed, saturated patterns of the figures' clothing to emerge. The print demonstrates Kuniyoshi's skill in characterisation and his interest in historical and legendary subjects. The lines are precise, defining the textures of the grasses, the bark of the pine, and the intricate designs on the warriors' robes. This work is a representative example of the musha-e, or warrior print, genre that defined much of Kuniyoshi's output during his later career. The print captures a moment of suspense, balancing the quiet atmosphere of the natural setting with the underlying tension of the impending confrontation.
