A detailed architectural study of a funerary monument by Dutch artist Gerrit Lamberts, featuring maritime motifs and classical sculptural elements.
This drawing by Gerrit Lamberts depicts a funerary monument, a genre that occupied a specific place in the documentation of Dutch heritage during the early nineteenth century. Lamberts, a draughtsman known for his meticulous records of Amsterdam buildings and monuments, captures the sculptural qualities of the memorial with precision. The composition is structured around a central rectangular tablet, intended for an inscription, which is flanked by elaborate decorative elements.
The iconography is typical of maritime-themed funerary art from the period. At the base, two mermen support the structure, while a relief panel between them depicts a naval scene, likely referencing the professional life of Anthony Pieterson. A skull and crossbones, a traditional memento mori, sits directly beneath the central tablet. The upper portion features a coat of arms topped by a crown, flanked by two putti blowing trumpets, which suggests a celebration of the deceased's status or achievements. The use of grey wash allows Lamberts to define the three-dimensional form of the stone carving, creating a sense of depth against the flat background.
Lamberts often produced these works as part of larger projects to record the appearance of monuments in churches and public spaces. His approach is objective, prioritising the clear representation of the monument's physical state and decorative programme. The drawing functions as both an artistic study and a historical record, preserving the visual details of a memorial that might otherwise be lost to time or decay. The monochromatic palette reinforces the sculptural nature of the subject, focusing the viewer's attention on the form, texture, and symbolic arrangement of the various components.
