A classic American Impressionist oil painting by T. C. Steele, capturing the golden light and pastoral scenery of Gordon Hill in rural Indiana.
Theodore Clement Steele, a central figure in the Hoosier Group, produced this work during his later years in Brown County, Indiana. The painting captures a specific topographical feature known as Gordon Hill, rendered with the characteristic light-sensitive brushwork of the American Impressionist movement. Steele moved to this rural region in 1907, seeking to document the changing seasons and the specific quality of light found in the Midwest.
The composition is anchored by a central body of water, which acts as a mirror for the sky and the surrounding foliage. Steele employs a palette dominated by golden yellows, ochres, and varied greens, reflecting the warmth of the sun upon the grassy slopes. The brushwork is loose and gestural, prioritising the capture of atmospheric conditions over rigid structural detail. The trees on the hillside are depicted with dabs of paint that suggest texture and movement, while the foreground remains relatively flat, drawing the eye toward the distant rise of the hill.
Steele studied at the Royal Academy in Munich, which influenced his early work with darker tones and precise drawing. However, his later output, including this piece, shows a clear shift toward the brighter, broken colour techniques associated with French Impressionism. He was interested in the way light transformed the mundane rural environment into something visually arresting. This work provides a record of the Indiana countryside before the onset of modern industrialisation, maintaining a focus on the quiet, pastoral nature of the region. The painting is a study in the interplay between the reflective surface of the water and the solid, textured forms of the earth and trees, demonstrating Steele's ability to translate the transient effects of a sunny day onto the canvas.
