A detailed seventeenth-century topographical drawing of Kasteel Nijenrode by Dutch artist Johannes Leupenius, rendered in pen, ink, and grey wash.
This drawing by Johannes Leupenius depicts Kasteel Nijenrode, a historic castle situated along the Vecht river in the Netherlands. Executed in pen and brown ink with grey wash, the work demonstrates the characteristic approach of Dutch draughtsmen during the late seventeenth century. Leupenius focuses on the architectural silhouette of the castle, which emerges from a dense cluster of trees. The artist employs varying densities of wash to suggest the play of light across the foliage and the calm surface of the water.
The composition is balanced, with the castle tower acting as the primary vertical element against the horizontal expanse of the river. The foreground remains relatively sparse, allowing the viewer to focus on the structure of the castle and its immediate surroundings. Leupenius was known for his topographical accuracy, and this piece provides a clear record of the site as it appeared during his lifetime. The use of ink lines to define the architectural details contrasts with the softer, more fluid application of the wash, which creates a sense of atmosphere and depth.
Such drawings were often produced as independent works of art or as preparatory studies for prints. The monochromatic palette, typical of the period, emphasises the draughtsmanship and the artist's ability to render texture and form through line and tone alone. This print captures the quiet, rural character of the Vecht region, a popular subject for artists of the Dutch Golden Age who sought to document the changing nature of the countryside. The work remains a precise example of seventeenth-century topographical observation, reflecting the period's interest in local geography and the preservation of architectural history through art.
