A detailed etching by Jan Goeree depicting the historic Weteringpoort gate in Amsterdam, showcasing the architectural and topographical character of the city.
This etching by Jan Goeree depicts the Weteringpoort, one of the historic city gates of Amsterdam. Goeree, a prolific draughtsman and engraver active during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, produced numerous topographical views that documented the urban and rural character of the Netherlands. His work provides a record of the fortifications and infrastructure that defined the city boundaries during this period.
The composition focuses on the gate structure, which is positioned behind a canal and a wooden drawbridge. The artist employs fine, controlled lines to delineate the architectural features of the gate and the surrounding defensive walls. A windmill is visible in the distance, a common feature in the Dutch periphery of the time. The sky occupies a significant portion of the frame, rendered with delicate hatching to suggest cloud formations and atmospheric depth. The foreground remains relatively sparse, allowing the viewer to focus on the scale of the gate in relation to the water and the bridge.
Goeree was known for his technical precision, often collaborating with publishers to create illustrations for historical and geographical texts. This print reflects the conventions of Dutch topographical art, where clarity and accuracy were prioritised to inform the viewer about specific locations. The inclusion of small figures near the water adds a sense of scale and human activity to the scene. The work is presented here as a high-quality fine art print, preserving the original character of the etching. It offers a glimpse into the historical topography of Amsterdam, capturing a moment before the city underwent significant expansion and modernisation. The print is suitable for those interested in Dutch history, architectural documentation, or the evolution of urban design in the Low Countries.
