A detailed historical etching by Jan Goeree depicting the medieval Sint-Antoniespoort and the Rondeel fortifications of Amsterdam.
This etching by Jan Goeree provides a historical record of Amsterdam as it appeared in the sixteenth century. The composition is divided into two distinct panels, each documenting a specific defensive structure that once defined the city perimeter. The upper panel depicts the Sint-Antoniespoort, a gatehouse that later evolved into the Waag on the Nieuwmarkt. The lower panel shows the Rondeel, a fortification featuring the Kolveniersdoelen tower and the surrounding city walls.
Goeree, a prolific Dutch draughtsman and engraver, produced these images to illustrate historical accounts of the city. His technique relies on precise line work to define the masonry of the gatehouse and the textures of the water and sky. The inclusion of small figures in the foreground, such as the boatmen in the lower scene and pedestrians near the gate, provides a sense of scale and daily activity. These prints are characteristic of the topographical documentation popular in the Netherlands during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, where artists sought to preserve the appearance of medieval architecture for future generations.
The etching demonstrates a clear, observational approach to architectural rendering. The artist employs cross-hatching to create shadow and depth, particularly in the rendering of the clouds and the reflections on the water. By presenting these structures as they appeared in 1544, Goeree connects the viewer to the urban development of Amsterdam, showing how the city transitioned from a fortified medieval settlement to a major commercial centre. The work is a fine example of the intersection between historical research and printmaking, offering a window into the physical transformation of the Dutch capital over several centuries.
