A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Jan Goeree depicting the historic Leidsepoort and Heiligewegspoort gates of Amsterdam.
This etching by Jan Goeree presents two distinct views of historic Amsterdam fortifications. The upper panel depicts the Leidsepoort, while the lower panel shows the older Heiligewegspoort. Goeree, a prolific draughtsman and engraver, produced these images to document the architectural character of the city during the late seventeenth century. His work provides a clear record of the urban periphery, capturing the transition between the built environment and the surrounding rural areas.
The composition relies on precise line work to delineate the stone structures, windmills, and bridges. In the upper scene, the inclusion of a windmill and figures near the water adds a sense of scale and daily activity to the defensive architecture. The lower scene focuses on the gate structure, rendered with attention to the masonry and the surrounding vegetation. The artist employs cross-hatching to suggest shadow and texture, creating a sense of depth within the modest dimensions of the print.
These topographical studies reflect the period interest in cartography and urban history. By documenting these gates, Goeree preserved the appearance of structures that were subject to the constant expansion and renovation of Amsterdam. The print is characteristic of the period, where the focus remains on clarity and accurate representation of civic landmarks. The inclusion of the date 1592 in the lower panel refers to the historical origin of the Heiligewegspoort, demonstrating the artist's concern with the chronological context of the city's development. This piece is a fine example of the documentary printmaking tradition that flourished in the Netherlands, offering a window into the past through the eyes of a skilled observer.
