A refined surimono woodblock print by Yashima Gakutei depicting the Emperor Xuanzong and Yang Guifei playing flutes, rendered with delicate detail and classical elegance.
This surimono print by Yashima Gakutei depicts the legendary Chinese Emperor Xuanzong (Genso) and his consort Yang Guifei (Yokihi). The figures are shown in an intimate moment, both playing transverse flutes. Gakutei, a student of Hokusai, was known for his technical mastery of the surimono format, which was typically commissioned by poetry clubs for private distribution. These prints often feature high-quality paper, metallic pigments, and embossing, reflecting the refined tastes of the Edo-period literati.
The composition is structured around the two figures seated within a formal, architectural space. The Emperor wears a patterned robe, while Yokihi is adorned in a garment featuring repeating geometric motifs. A hanging lantern with decorative tassels occupies the upper left, providing a sense of depth and domestic setting. To the right, a vertical panel contains calligraphic text, a common feature in surimono that links the visual image to the accompanying poetry. The colour palette is restrained, relying on deep blues, muted oranges, and subtle greys to create a sense of quietude.
Gakutei’s work is characterised by a precise line quality and a focus on historical and literary themes. His ability to render textiles and facial expressions with such economy of means demonstrates the sophistication of the Ukiyo-e tradition during the early 19th century. This print captures the tragic romance of the couple, a subject frequently explored in East Asian literature and art. The attention to detail in the patterns of the clothing and the delicate rendering of the musical instruments reflect the high standards of craftsmanship expected in these private commissions. The print remains a fine example of the intersection between visual art and classical poetry in Japanese culture.
