A refined woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi, reinterpreting the Tale of Genji through the lens of late eighteenth-century Edo fashion.
This woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi belongs to the series Fūryū yatsushi Genji, or Genji in Fashionable Modern Guise. Eishi, a former painter in the service of the Tokugawa shogunate, transitioned to the ukiyo-e genre in the late eighteenth century. His work is recognised for its slender, elegant figures and a departure from the more robust proportions favoured by his contemporaries.
The composition reinterprets the classic Tale of Genji, a foundational work of Japanese literature, by placing the narrative within a contemporary Edo-period setting. The scene depicts figures in a coastal environment, referencing the chapter where the protagonist Genji lives in seclusion at Suma. The artist employs a restrained palette, focusing on the interplay of line and form rather than saturated colour. The figures are rendered with elongated limbs and refined facial features, characteristic of Eishi's mature style. The architectural elements, such as the sliding shoji screens and the veranda, provide a structural frame for the figures, while the distant sea and pine trees suggest the atmospheric isolation of the original literary source.
Eishi was particularly known for his bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women, and this print demonstrates his ability to integrate such figures into complex narrative scenes. The attention to the patterns on the kimonos and the subtle shading of the background demonstrates the technical proficiency of the carvers and printers who collaborated with Eishi. This print offers a window into how classical literature was adapted and consumed by the urban population of Edo, bridging the gap between historical courtly culture and the popular aesthetic of the floating world.
