A classic Yokohama-e woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshikazu, depicting a French couple in a domestic setting during the late Edo period.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshikazu belongs to the Yokohama-e genre, a category of ukiyo-e produced during the late Edo period. Following the opening of Japan to international trade in 1859, artists in Yokohama documented the appearance and customs of foreign visitors. These works provided the Japanese public with visual information about Westerners, who were often depicted with a mixture of curiosity and stylistic interpretation.
The composition shows a French man and woman in an interior setting. The man stands, holding a pocket watch, while the woman sits in a chair, holding a book. The artist employs a flat, graphic approach to the figures, characteristic of the period, while incorporating Western elements such as the mirror and the specific tailoring of the clothing. The colour palette is restrained, relying on the soft blue background to unify the scene. The text in the cartouche identifies the subjects as French, reflecting the era's fascination with categorising foreign nationalities through dress and accessories.
Yoshikazu was a pupil of Utagawa Kuniyoshi and was particularly active in producing these prints for a domestic audience eager to understand the changing world. The print serves as a record of the cultural exchange occurring at the port of Yokohama. The figures are rendered with clear outlines, and the domestic furniture is depicted with a simplified perspective. This print offers a glimpse into how Japanese artists visualised European life during the early years of the Meiji Restoration's precursor period, capturing a moment of transition in Japanese art history.
