Descripción
A striking Expressionist portrait by Max Pechstein, featuring bold ink lines and expressive watercolour washes.
This watercolour and ink study by Max Pechstein captures a woman's head in profile, demonstrating the characteristic urgency of the German Expressionist movement. Pechstein, a member of the Die Brücke group, often utilised simplified forms and non-naturalistic colour to convey emotional states rather than objective reality. The work features bold, calligraphic ink lines that define the facial contours and the rhythmic, curly texture of the hair. These dark outlines contrast with the loose application of watercolour washes in yellow, red, and violet.
The composition is direct and unadorned, focusing entirely on the subject's gaze. The artist avoids traditional modelling, opting instead for flat planes of colour that interact with the white of the paper. This approach reflects the influence of primitive art and the Fauvist interest in expressive colour, both of which were central to Pechstein's practice during his most active years. The signature HMP in the lower right corner confirms the work as an authentic piece from his hand.
In this portrait, the subject is rendered with minimal detail, yet the economy of line provides a clear sense of character. The interplay between the dark, sweeping ink strokes and the translucent washes creates a sense of movement. The work is representative of the informal, sketch-like quality found in much of Pechstein's graphic output, where the immediacy of the medium is preserved. It serves as a study of form and colour, stripped of unnecessary background elements to maintain a singular focus on the human subject. The piece is an example of the raw, emotive style that defined the early twentieth-century avant-garde in Germany.

Artist Biography
Max Pechstein
He was born in Zwickau in 1881 and apprenticed as a decorator from 1896 to 1900 before studying at the Dresden art school. Erich Heckel invited him to join Die Brucke in 1906. Contact with Matisse pushed his palette toward jarring, unmixed colour, but his compositions retained a warmth and legibility that made them easier to sell than the work of his peers.
At the outbreak of the First World War he was interned in Japan and returned to Germany via Shanghai, Manila and New York. He saw action at the Somme and suffered a nervous breakdown. In 1918 he co-founded the Novembergruppe, a left-wing artists' group that demanded artist involvement in postwar social policy.
The Nazis classified his work as degenerate. Over three hundred paintings were seized from German museums. He was banned from exhibiting and dismissed from the Prussian Academy. He produced 421 lithographs, 315 woodcuts and linocuts, and 165 etchings over his career, making him one of the most prolific printmakers of the Expressionist generation. After the war he was rehabilitated, given a professorship in Berlin and elected to the Academy of Arts. He died in Berlin in 1955, at seventy-three.
