A 1920 Dada collage by Kurt Schwitters, featuring an assembly of found paper, printed ephemera, and geometric forms.
Forms in Space, created in 1920, represents the distinctive approach of Kurt Schwitters to the medium of collage. Schwitters, a central figure in the Dada movement, developed his own personal aesthetic which he termed Merz. This term derived from a fragment of the word Kommerz found in one of his early collages. Rather than seeking traditional artistic materials, Schwitters gathered discarded items from his immediate environment: train tickets, newspaper clippings, fabric scraps, and printed ephemera.
In this work, the composition relies on the arrangement of these disparate elements to create a sense of spatial tension. The overlapping fragments of paper and card create a shallow depth, where the eye moves across the surface, tracing the intersections of geometric shapes and printed text. The colour palette is dominated by earthy ochres, deep blues, and blacks, which provide a grounding effect for the chaotic nature of the found materials. The inclusion of grid patterns and typographic elements introduces a rhythmic quality to the piece, suggesting a structured order within the apparent randomness of the assembly.
Schwitters utilised these compositions to recontextualise the mundane objects of daily life. By removing these items from their original functional purpose, he allowed them to exist purely as formal elements. The work reflects the post-war climate of Germany, where the reconstruction of society and culture often involved the repurposing of fragments from a fractured reality. This piece remains a primary example of how Schwitters transformed the detritus of urban life into a coherent visual language. The signature and date at the bottom, along with the designation Mz 169, confirm its place within his systematic catalogue of Merz works.
