A 1947 collage by Dada artist Kurt Schwitters, featuring layered comic illustrations and postal ephemera.
Kurt Schwitters, a central figure in the Dada movement, produced this collage during his final years in the United Kingdom. The work exemplifies his Merz practice, which involved the assembly of discarded ephemera into new compositions. By repurposing printed materials, such as comic strips and postal stamps, Schwitters transforms mass-produced imagery into a personal, tactile arrangement.
The composition features fragments of illustrated figures, likely sourced from popular media of the 1940s. These disparate elements are layered with translucent paper and a registered postage stamp, creating a sense of depth through physical texture rather than traditional perspective. The inclusion of the handwritten dedication 'For Kate' and the artist's signature at the bottom provides a direct link to his personal life during his exile in the Lake District. The work reflects his interest in the aesthetic potential of everyday objects, a method he developed in Hanover and continued to refine until his death.
Schwitters maintained a consistent approach to his late collages, often using small-scale formats that allowed for precise placement of torn edges and printed text. The colour palette is dominated by the aged, warm tones of newsprint and paper, punctuated by the bold, flat colours of the comic illustrations. This piece offers a glimpse into the artist's process of recontextualising the mundane. It demonstrates how he found order within the chaos of post-war life, using the debris of contemporary culture to construct a private narrative. The work remains a clear example of his ability to elevate humble materials through careful, deliberate placement.
