A detailed etching by Jules Ferdinand Jacquemart depicting hearth tools, including a brazier and bellows, rendered with precise cross-hatching.
Jules Ferdinand Jacquemart was a master of the etching medium, particularly noted for his technical precision in reproducing objects. This work, titled Fire, demonstrates his ability to render diverse textures through line work alone. The composition features a collection of hearth-related items, including a brazier, a metal pitcher, and a pair of bellows. Jacquemart uses varying densities of cross-hatching to define the metallic sheen of the pitcher and the rougher, porous surface of the ceramic brazier.
His approach to still life often focused on the material qualities of domestic objects. By isolating these items from a broader narrative, he invites the viewer to observe the craftsmanship of the tools themselves. The bellows, positioned in the foreground, are rendered with fine, parallel lines that suggest the grain of wood and the tension of the leather. The background remains relatively dark, allowing the light to catch the edges of the metalware and the curves of the bellows. This focus on the physical reality of the subject is characteristic of the mid-nineteenth-century French interest in documenting the material world with scientific accuracy.
Jacquemart was the son of the art historian Albert Jacquemart, and his upbringing surrounded by decorative arts informed his meticulous style. His etchings were frequently used to illustrate catalogues and scholarly texts, which required a high degree of fidelity to the original objects. In this print, the artist avoids unnecessary ornamentation, preferring to let the interplay of light and shadow describe the form. The result is a study that balances technical rigour with a quiet, observational quality. It provides a clear view into the domestic technology of the period, captured with the disciplined hand of a printmaker who understood the potential of the copper plate to convey tactile information.
