Descripción
A minimalist abstract work from Cy Twombly's 1978 Iliad-inspired cycle, featuring soft, atmospheric tones and the artist's signature script.
This work is part of the ten-part cycle titled Fifty Days at Iliam, created by Cy Twombly in 1978. The series draws inspiration from Alexander Pope's translation of Homer's Iliad. Twombly engages with the epic narrative through a minimalist visual language, focusing on the emotional weight of the Trojan War rather than literal depiction. The composition features a soft, cloud-like form rendered in muted grey and blue tones, suggesting an atmospheric or ethereal presence. Below this form, the title is inscribed in the artist's characteristic, hesitant script.
Twombly often utilised the tension between text and image, treating handwriting as a graphic element that carries its own rhythm. The application of medium is sparse, allowing the texture of the paper to remain visible. This approach reflects his interest in the history of mark-making and the reduction of complex literary themes into singular, evocative gestures. The work occupies a space between drawing and painting, where the physical act of applying pigment becomes the subject itself. By isolating specific phrases and forms, Twombly invites the viewer to contemplate the passage of time and the weight of classical mythology in a contemporary context. The lack of dense detail encourages a meditative engagement with the negative space, which functions as a structural component of the piece. This print captures the subtle gradations of the original crayon work, preserving the delicate balance between the ethereal cloud form and the grounded, handwritten text.
