An eighteenth-century etching by the comte de Caylus, reproducing a church facade design attributed to Raphael from the collection of Pierre Crozat.
This etching, titled Façade d'Eglise, is a reproduction of a drawing attributed to Raphael, which was held in the collection of Pierre Crozat. The work was produced by the comte de Caylus, a French aristocrat, antiquarian, and amateur engraver who played a significant role in the dissemination of Old Master drawings during the eighteenth century. The print is part of the Recueil Crozat, a multi-volume publication that documented the finest works of art in French private collections.
The composition presents a symmetrical church front, characterised by a central pediment flanked by two tall, tiered towers. The architectural style reflects the High Renaissance interest in classical proportions, featuring arched portals, columns, and geometric ornamentation. The comte de Caylus utilised a clean, linear etching technique to translate the original ink or chalk drawing into a reproducible format. The lines are precise and restrained, focusing on the structural clarity of the building rather than atmospheric effects or tonal depth. Below the main structure, the artist includes small, detached architectural details, likely representing ground plans or decorative elements of the church facade.
As a record of a lost or private drawing, this print offers insight into the eighteenth-century practice of documenting art through engraving. The comte de Caylus was known for his dedication to the study of antiquity and his efforts to make the contents of private cabinets accessible to a wider audience of scholars and artists. The work remains a clear example of the technical precision expected in the reproduction of architectural studies during the period. The print retains the original caption, which identifies the source as a drawing by Raphael d'Urbin from the cabinet of Monsieur Crozat, confirming its provenance within the context of the Recueil Crozat project.
