A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, capturing the serene atmosphere of Evening Bells at Mii near Lake Biwa.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the scene of Evening Bells at Mii, a subject drawn from the traditional Eight Views of Omi. The composition focuses on the temple of Mii-dera, located near Lake Biwa. Hiroshige employs a vertical format to capture the atmospheric transition from day to night. The upper portion of the print features a gradient sky, shifting from a pale yellow horizon to a deep indigo at the top edge. Below, the dark silhouette of the mountain dominates the frame, providing a contrast to the water below.
The artist uses a limited palette to evoke the quietude of the evening hour. The water is rendered in shades of blue and grey, with small white shapes representing boats or structures upon the surface. The technique of bokashi, or colour gradation, is evident in the sky and the water, demonstrating the skill of the carvers and printers who worked with Hiroshige. The inclusion of the temple bell, implied by the title, suggests the auditory experience of the location, a common trope in classical Japanese poetry and art.
Hiroshige was a master of the Ukiyo-e genre, particularly known for his ability to imbue topographical subjects with a sense of mood and weather. His work often prioritised the emotional resonance of a place over strict cartographic accuracy. This print is part of a series that explores the beauty of the Omi province, a region celebrated for its historical and cultural associations. The clean lines and balanced composition reflect the aesthetic standards of the Edo period, where the depiction of famous sites became a popular subject for the urban population. This print offers a view into the historical appreciation of the Japanese countryside, captured through the medium of the woodblock print.
