A dark, atmospheric depiction of a nineteenth-century tooth extraction, capturing the grim reality of medical practices through the lens of Spanish Costumbrismo.
Leonardo Alenza, a figure of the Spanish Romantic period, captures a grim scene of daily life in this work. The painting depicts a toothpuller at work, a common subject for artists interested in the social realities of nineteenth-century Spain. The composition is dark and claustrophobic, reflecting the harsh conditions of the era. The central figure, the patient, is restrained by onlookers while the practitioner performs the extraction with crude tools. Alenza uses a muted, earthy palette to define the interior space, where light enters from a single source, casting deep shadows across the figures.
This work belongs to the genre of Costumbrismo, which focused on the depiction of local customs, manners, and the lives of ordinary people. Alenza was known for his satirical and often cynical view of society, and this painting is no exception. The expressions of the surrounding figures range from indifference to morbid curiosity, adding a layer of psychological tension to the scene. The rough textures of the clothing and the dimly lit room suggest a setting far removed from the refined salons of the period. By focusing on such a visceral and painful moment, Alenza provides a glimpse into the medical practices of the time, stripped of any romantic idealisation. The artist's brushwork is loose and expressive, prioritising the mood and the narrative over precise anatomical detail. This approach creates a sense of immediacy, drawing the viewer into the cramped, uncomfortable environment of the makeshift surgery. The painting remains a notable example of how Spanish artists of the early nineteenth century turned their gaze toward the darker, more mundane aspects of human existence, documenting the struggles of the working class with a sharp, observant eye.
