A pair of traditional hanging scrolls depicting the classic Eight Views of Xiao and Xiang theme, rendered in ink and light colour on silk.
The Eight Views of Xiao and Xiang is a traditional theme in East Asian art, originating from Chinese poetry and painting traditions. Iwasa Matabei, a figure associated with the early Edo period, adopts this classical subject matter, applying his own stylistic sensibilities to the depiction of these specific locations near the Xiao and Xiang rivers. The work consists of two vertical hanging scrolls, each presenting a serene, atmospheric scene that captures the interplay between water, mountain, and mist.
In these compositions, the artist employs a restrained palette of ink washes, supplemented by subtle touches of colour. The mountains rise from the mist, their forms softened by the application of ink, while the foreground features small structures, trees, and figures in boats. The composition relies on the use of negative space, a common technique in ink wash painting, to suggest the vastness of the water and the depth of the atmosphere. The vertical orientation of the scrolls encourages a slow, contemplative viewing experience, moving the eye from the detailed foreground elements up towards the distant, hazy peaks.
Iwasa Matabei is often associated with the development of the Ukiyo-e style, yet his earlier works, such as these scrolls, demonstrate a clear connection to the Kano school and traditional ink painting techniques. The brushwork is precise, particularly in the rendering of the architectural elements and the foliage, while the mountains are treated with broader, softer strokes to convey their mass and distance. The mounting of the scrolls, featuring patterned silk borders, complements the delicate nature of the paintings themselves. This work provides a view into the artistic transition of the early seventeenth century, where traditional themes were reinterpreted through a distinct personal lens.
