A 1933 geometric abstraction by Sophie Taeuber-Arp, featuring rhythmic white wave-like forms set against a dark charcoal background.
Sophie Taeuber-Arp was a central figure in the development of European abstraction. Her work, Echelonnement desaxe, created in 1933, demonstrates her rigorous approach to geometric form and spatial organisation. The composition consists of a series of white, wave-like shapes arranged against a dark, charcoal-grey ground. These forms vary in width and curvature, creating a rhythmic visual sequence that avoids traditional perspective.
Taeuber-Arp trained in textile design and applied arts, a background that informs the precision found in her paintings. She rejected the emotional subjectivity of earlier movements, preferring instead the clarity of Concrete Art. In this piece, the relationship between the positive white shapes and the negative dark space is balanced with mathematical care. The title, which translates roughly to 'offset staggering', describes the deliberate displacement of the forms, which prevents the image from settling into a static or symmetrical arrangement.
Her practice often bridged the gap between fine art and functional design. This work reflects her interest in the modular nature of form, where individual elements function as parts of a larger, coherent system. The clean edges and lack of painterly texture allow the viewer to focus entirely on the interplay of shape and interval. By stripping away representational content, Taeuber-Arp invites an engagement with the fundamental properties of line and plane. This print captures the stark contrast and disciplined composition of the original gouache, providing a clear view of her methodical approach to visual order. It is a representative example of the mid-career period of an artist who sought to unify art with the structures of daily life.
