A classic Yokohama-e woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshikazu, depicting a Dutch couple during the late Edo period of Japanese history.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshikazu belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e, which emerged during the late Edo period. As Japan began to open its ports to foreign trade, artists documented the arrival of Westerners with curiosity. These prints functioned as visual news reports for a public largely unfamiliar with the appearance and customs of people from outside the Japanese archipelago.
The composition depicts a Dutch man seated on a Western-style chair, holding a glass, while a companion stands beside him. A table holds a potted plant and a bottle, items that would have appeared exotic to the contemporary Japanese viewer. The artist employs a blend of traditional Japanese line work and an attempt to render Western anatomical features and clothing. The facial expressions and the posture of the figures reflect the artist's interpretation of foreign subjects, often resulting in a stylised representation that bridges two distinct cultural visual languages.
Utagawa Yoshikazu was a member of the Utagawa school, a prolific group of printmakers. His work in this genre captures a specific moment of transition in Japanese history. The print provides a glimpse into the fascination with the 'other' that defined the Yokohama-e movement. The figures are rendered with clear, deliberate lines, and the overall arrangement is relatively sparse, focusing the viewer's attention on the interaction between the two individuals and the objects they possess. This piece serves as a historical record of the early encounters between Japan and the West, documenting the visual impact of these new arrivals on the Japanese artistic imagination.
