A minimalist work by Dorothea Rockburne from her 1973 series, exploring geometric abstraction through the process of carbon paper transfer.
Dorothea Rockburne, born in Montreal in 1932, is a central figure in the development of process-based abstraction. Her work often engages with the physical properties of materials and the mathematical logic of geometry. The series titled Drawing Which Makes Itself, produced in the early 1970s, investigates the relationship between the artist, the medium, and the resulting form.
In this specific work, Rockburne utilises carbon paper as both a tool and a component of the final composition. By folding and manipulating the paper, she allows the pressure of the folds to transfer carbon onto the surface. This method removes the need for traditional mark-making, as the image emerges from the internal logic of the material itself. The resulting composition is a series of precise, geometric divisions that rely on the subtle tonal variations of the carbon transfer.
Visually, the piece is defined by its restraint. The monochromatic palette and the clean, structural lines create a sense of order. The work avoids decorative elements, focusing instead on the physical reality of the paper and the mechanics of its creation. The composition is balanced, with symmetrical forms that suggest a rigorous adherence to mathematical principles.
Rockburne's approach to drawing is rooted in the idea that the process is the subject. By allowing the materials to dictate the outcome, she creates a dialogue between the artist's intent and the inherent characteristics of the medium. This work is an example of her ability to combine conceptual rigour with a refined aesthetic sensibility. It invites the viewer to consider the act of creation as a series of logical steps, where the final image is a record of the physical actions taken to produce it.
