A sixteenth-century etching by Nicolaas Hogenberg depicting a procession of noble figures on horseback, complete with heraldic details and historical text.
This etching by Nicolaas Hogenberg belongs to a series documenting the ceremonial procession of Emperor Charles V. The work captures a group of noble figures on horseback, rendered with the precise line work characteristic of sixteenth-century printmaking. Hogenberg, a Flemish artist active in the early sixteenth century, focused his practice on recording the pageantry and political figures of the Habsburg court.
The composition is organised horizontally, reflecting the nature of a processional frieze. The figures are depicted in contemporary sixteenth-century attire, including doublets, hose, and plumed hats, mounted on horses that display a sense of movement and posture. Above the riders, the artist includes heraldic shields and a cartouche containing French text, which identifies the figures and provides historical context regarding the lineage of the Spanish and Sicilian monarchs.
The etching technique allows for fine detail in the textures of the clothing and the musculature of the horses. The inclusion of the coat of arms and the decorative frame around the text block demonstrates the influence of contemporary manuscript illumination and print design. This print serves as a visual record of the formal entries and public displays that defined the political theatre of the era. The work is part of a larger sequence that functioned as a commemorative document for the coronation and travels of the Emperor. By focusing on the individual nobility, Hogenberg provides a view into the social hierarchy and visual culture of the period. The print remains a useful resource for historians studying the costume, heraldry, and ceremonial practices of the early modern European court.
