A detailed seventeenth-century etching depicting the interior of a needle-making workshop, part of a series documenting traditional Dutch trades.
This etching, titled De Naaldemaaker, originates from the series Menselyk Bedryf (Human Occupations), a collection documenting the various trades and crafts of the late seventeenth-century Netherlands. Cornelis van der Sys provides a detailed view into a needle-making workshop, capturing the physical labour and the specific tools required for the production of metal goods. The composition is structured around a central workbench where artisans are engaged in the precise tasks of shaping and finishing needles. To the right, a large grinding wheel dominates the foreground, suggesting the mechanical processes involved in the trade. The background reveals a glimpse of a town street, grounding the workshop within a broader urban context.
The print includes Dutch text above and below the image, which serves to moralise the trade. The inscription reflects the period's interest in linking professional activity to ethical conduct. The artist employs fine, controlled lines to delineate the textures of the wooden furniture, the metallic sheen of the tools, and the folds of the workers' clothing. The perspective is carefully managed to guide the eye through the cramped, busy interior of the shop. This work is a historical record of pre-industrial manufacturing, offering insight into the division of labour and the daily environment of Dutch craftsmen. The inclusion of the verse adds a layer of social commentary, common in prints of this era, which often sought to educate the viewer on the virtues of industry and the potential pitfalls of greed. The print remains a clear example of the documentary style prevalent in Dutch printmaking during the late seventeenth century.
