This woodcut by Aristide Maillol depicts the central figures of the ancient Greek pastoral romance, Daphnis and Chloe. Commissioned by the publisher Henri Kahnweiler, Maillol produced a series of illustrations for the 1937 edition of Longus's tale. The artist, primarily known for his sculpture, applied a similar approach to his graphic work: he prioritised simplified forms, clear outlines, and a sense of volume that echoes his three-dimensional practice.

The composition is contained within a square frame, showing the two figures seated at the base of a large oak tree. The branches of the tree arch over the couple, providing a natural canopy that frames their embrace.
