A masterpiece of the Vienna Secession, this 1907 painting depicts the Greek myth of Danaë through Klimt's signature use of gold leaf and decorative patterns.
Painted between 1907 and 1908, Danaë is a primary example of Gustav Klimt's mature style. The work depicts the Greek mythological figure of Danaë, who was imprisoned by her father in a bronze tower. Zeus visited her in the form of a shower of gold, which is represented here by the cascade of coins and abstract geometric forms flowing between her legs.
Klimt adopts a square format for this composition, a choice he frequently employed during his Golden Phase. The figure of Danaë is curled into a foetal position, her body rendered with soft, pale tones that contrast with the dark background and the metallic sheen of the gold. Her expression is one of passive surrender, her eyes closed and mouth slightly parted. The surrounding fabric, decorated with dark purple and gold circular motifs, provides a decorative frame that flattens the pictorial space.
This painting demonstrates the artist's interest in eroticism and the decorative arts. The influence of Byzantine mosaics is visible in the application of gold leaf and the stylised, repetitive patterns. Unlike traditional academic treatments of the myth, which often focus on the narrative action, Klimt concentrates on the psychological and sensual state of the subject. The composition avoids depth, opting instead for a surface-oriented arrangement that prioritises pattern and texture. The work remains a significant piece within the Vienna Secession movement, reflecting the period's fascination with the subconscious and the decorative potential of the canvas.
