Kawanabe Kyōsai was a prolific artist of the late Edo and early Meiji periods, known for his technical skill and his independent spirit. This work, Crow on a Branch, captures the artist's ability to convey movement and character through minimal brushwork. The crow is rendered in deep, saturated ink, with the feathers suggested by quick, decisive strokes that imply texture and weight. The bird is hunched, its head turned downwards, creating a sense of quiet observation.
