Descripción
A 1914 abstract work by Piet Mondrian featuring a grid of black lines and soft colour planes within an oval frame.
Piet Mondrian painted this work in 1914 during his time in Paris. It represents a specific stage in his move towards total abstraction. The composition is contained within an oval shape, a format often used by Cubist painters to avoid the problem of resolving corners in a non-representational space.
The work consists of a scaffold of black horizontal and vertical lines. These lines vary in thickness and length, creating a rhythmic structure across the canvas. Within this grid, Mondrian placed rectangular planes of colour. The palette is limited to pale pink, ochre, and light blue, set against a grey background. These colours are not the bold primaries of his later career but are softer and more atmospheric.
The arrangement suggests the influence of Parisian architecture. Mondrian often drew inspiration from the facades of buildings and the scaffolding he saw in the city. In this piece, the architectural elements are reduced to their basic linear components. The lines do not always meet, leaving open spaces that give the composition a sense of lightness.
This painting is part of a series where Mondrian explored the balance between vertical and horizontal elements. He sought to find a universal language of form that could express a sense of order. The use of the oval frame focuses the viewer on the central arrangement of shapes. It prevents the eye from wandering to the edges of the rectangular canvas.

Artist Biography
Piet Mondrian
Mondrian's move towards abstraction was gradual but decisive. He was influenced by Cubism after moving to Paris, but he ultimately distilled his art to its most essential elements. This radical simplification led to the birth of De Stijl, a Dutch artistic movement that sought universal harmony through pure abstraction. Mondrian believed that by reducing painting to its fundamental components – line, colour, and form – he could reveal a deeper, more spiritual reality.
Though he lived and worked in Europe for much of his life, Mondrian eventually settled in New York City during World War II. His final paintings, such as "Broadway Boogie Woogie," reflect the vibrant energy of his new urban environment. This iconic work, with its pulsating rhythms and dynamic composition, stands as a testament to Mondrian's enduring quest to capture the essence of modern life through the language of pure abstraction. His legacy continues to inspire artists and designers today.
