Descripción
A 1913 abstract oil painting by Piet Mondrian, featuring a rhythmic arrangement of grey, blue, and ochre planes.
Piet Mondrian created this work during his formative period in Paris, where he engaged with the analytical methods of Cubism. By 1913, Mondrian had begun to move away from representational subjects, opting instead for a systematic reduction of form. This painting demonstrates his transition toward the geometric abstraction that would define his later career.
The composition relies on a restricted palette of ochre, grey, and blue tones. Mondrian organises the surface through a series of overlapping planes and short, rhythmic brushstrokes. These elements create a sense of structure that avoids traditional perspective. The lines, while not yet the rigid black grids of his later Neo-Plasticist works, provide a framework that holds the fragmented shapes in place. The viewer observes a balance between the vertical and horizontal axes, a characteristic that Mondrian explored throughout his time in France.
Unlike his later works, which often feature primary colours and stark white backgrounds, this piece retains a tactile quality. The paint application is visible, showing the artist's process as he constructed the image. The work reflects the influence of Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso, yet it maintains a distinct sense of order. Mondrian uses the interplay of light and shadow, rendered through subtle shifts in tone, to suggest depth without relying on realistic modelling. This painting offers a view into the development of modernism, capturing a moment where the artist moved from observing the physical world to constructing an internal logic of form and space.

Composition in Grey and Blue - Piet Mondrian
Artist Biography
Piet Mondrian
Mondrian's move towards abstraction was gradual but decisive. He was influenced by Cubism after moving to Paris, but he ultimately distilled his art to its most essential elements. This radical simplification led to the birth of De Stijl, a Dutch artistic movement that sought universal harmony through pure abstraction. Mondrian believed that by reducing painting to its fundamental components – line, colour, and form – he could reveal a deeper, more spiritual reality.
Though he lived and worked in Europe for much of his life, Mondrian eventually settled in New York City during World War II. His final paintings, such as "Broadway Boogie Woogie," reflect the vibrant energy of his new urban environment. This iconic work, with its pulsating rhythms and dynamic composition, stands as a testament to Mondrian's enduring quest to capture the essence of modern life through the language of pure abstraction. His legacy continues to inspire artists and designers today.
