A classical depiction of the Greek enchantress Circe, surrounded by tamed wild animals, painted by the French Academic artist Alexandre Cabanel.
Alexandre Cabanel, a prominent figure of the French Academic tradition, painted this work in 1887. It depicts the Greek mythological figure Circe, the enchantress from Homer's Odyssey, standing amidst a collection of tamed wild animals. The composition is structured around the central figure of Circe, who stands atop a set of stone steps, her posture composed and authoritative. She is surrounded by lions, a tiger, and other beasts, all rendered with the technical precision characteristic of the artist's training at the École des Beaux-Arts.
The scene is set within an architectural framework, featuring classical columns that frame the space and draw the eye toward the subject. Cabanel employs a controlled palette, focusing on the textures of the animals' fur and the flowing drapery of Circe's attire. Petals are scattered across the foreground steps, adding a decorative element to the composition. The lighting is even, allowing for the clear articulation of form and the smooth finish typical of the period's salon paintings.
Cabanel was known for his ability to balance historical and mythological subjects with a polished, refined aesthetic. This painting demonstrates his command of anatomy and his capacity to create a sense of narrative tension through the placement of figures. The animals, while wild by nature, appear docile in the presence of the sorceress, reflecting her power as described in classical literature. The work remains a clear example of the late nineteenth-century interest in classical themes, executed with the meticulous attention to detail that defined the Academic style of the era.
